56" AFD - Supersize me!

One of this year’s most outstanding projects was undoubtedly the 56”AFD. It earned its special significance by the extreme demands imposed upon its mechanical, electronic and magnetic performance, paired with the extremely short development time we had at our disposal. Under closest co-operation of all processes within the RTRC a tool was developed in only 3.5 months, which weighs more than fi ve tons, posses more than 2,000 measuring channels and has yet to find its equal. The RTRC could rely on experiences made while developing the speed control unit for the 56” CDG. For the construction of the yoke however, we had to enter entirely new terrain, resulting in a fascinating look of the new tool. The many measuring channels require a significantly larger number of electronics modules than usual. This causes an enormous information fl ow-rate and heat development, which is countered with a thermally optimized design of electronics and software enhancements. More than 320,000 m² of a 100 km-long pipeline are scanned utilizing a raster of only 3 mm. The resulting enormous data set requires special hardware on site as well as for the data evaluation. In order for the whole project to be carried out in short time, RTRC coordinated all necessary steps up to data evaluation. The fi rst run of the new tool took place only four months after the project start and was nevertheless a full success. The test results were then used for smaller modifi cations in order to achieve a further optimization of the tool and its data processing characteristics. Thus, nothing blocks the way for the next 900 km.
