As the title already suggests, the Robotic Pipe Scanner 6” has welcomed a new addition. The new family of products, which examines “fl ow lines” that are not pigable, covers now sizes 6” – 12”. But their common denominator is only of a rather optical nature... The development of the 12” RPS began in January 2004 with just a white sheet of paper. We entered new grounds regarding its construction, electronics and sensor technology. However, experiences gathered while developing the 6” Tool and proven technologies from the Inline Inspection Tool area were taken into consideration for the new tool. “Easy and compact” was the motto. Apart from the lightweight construction of its mechanical outfit (titanium, aluminum, ceramic) this also applied to the CAN bus system, which accesses and supervises all engines and modules. Now, sensors from the CDP area of tools make a high resolution possible.
In a record time of nine months everything was completely finished and tested. Besides all mechanism and electronic components this included the new software as well. The 12” Tool was the basis for the 8” and 10” variants, which were likewise fi nished in 2004. After completion all new tools were whisked to the desert! The new “RPS Fleet” had to master their initial task under extreme climatic conditions (50° C) in the hot desert state of Oman. The fi rst project covered 150 km of a very complex “flow line grid” ranging in size from 8 to 12”. The initial applications ran very successfully in close co-operation with ROSEN Inspection Technologies (RIT) in Zoetermeer who is responsible for marketing and deployment of the RPS. The new generation has already proven itself in the field.
