EMAT – Ultrasound That’s Something
Else...
Smallest fissures can often trigger devastating chain reactions. Not only in nature, do we find numerous examples for this effect... When it comes to pipelines these tiny socalled hairline-cracks in the pipeline wall are often the cause of pipeline accidents with catastrophic consequences for humans and the environment. These cracks cannot be recognized with the naked eye. And they can develop in a variety of ways as for example: Fatigue cracks (by repeated increasing and lowering of pressure) Stress corrosion cracks (SCC) because of mechanical stress and certain environmental influences. The manufacture and welding process of the pipeline can also be a cause. This kind of defects cannot be sufficiently detected and identifi ed using only conventional technologies. Due to growing market demands ROSEN decided to start developing inspection devices for this specific market sub-segment. “EMAT” is the magic word! Teamed up with specialists from the U.S.A., we developed a fi rst 34” EMAT prototype during the months from January to September. The tool was extensively tried out in a testing station modeled from an original pipeline, which contained hairline cracks colonies. During numerous test runs, it was sometimes necessary to work late or even to show up on the weekend. Many thanks again to the EMAT shift for their cooperation! And it was worth it! Eventually, all cracks could be clearly identified, which confirmed the new technology. Further experiments are planned, which will be already employ ROSEN components...
